Sexism is discrimination against someone based on sex or gender. Anyone can be sexist, and sexism can be against anyone.
Sexism (also called misogyny) is a system of discrimination in which men and masculinity are valued over women and femininity. Sexism supports the gender binary by reinforcing strict gender roles based upon assigned sex

Examples of sexist discrimination against women include:

* Being seen, legally or socially, as property of male relatives such as fathers or husbands.

* Being valued for appearance and sexual attractiveness over personality and intelligence.

* Being seen as more suited for domestic or administrative work, which is often unpaid or low-paid, rather than work based upon mechanical or logical skills, which is typically higher-paid.

* Receiving lower pay for equal work (referred to as the gender pay gap).

* Increased risk of sexual assault and domestic partner violence.

Although women are the main target of sexist discrimination, sexism also affects men and those assigned male at birth, who are discriminated against for expressing any signs of femininity such as open expression of emotion, a lack of aggression, or interest in stereotypically female activities such as sewing, cooking or childcare. For this reason, sexism is especially targeted at trans women and other transfeminine people, in which case it is known as transmisogyny.
