Top surgery refers to any form of gender confirmation surgery which affects the chest and breast tissue. Top surgery may be a part of medical transition.
Masculinizing Top Surgery[]
Double Incision[]
This is the most common type of masculinizing top surgery. It involves the following:
- Removing the nipples and areolae and decreasing their size.
- Making long incisions to access and remove the breasts.
- Performing liposuction to remove excess fat.
- Removing excess skin, if necessary.
- Preventing skin puckering (sometimes referred to dog ears) near the incision with special stitches.
- Reattaching the optimized nipples and areolas to the chest.
Periareolar Surgery[]
This option is for individuals with smaller chests. It may involve:
- Making one circular incision around the border of the areola.
- Making a larger circular incision around the first one.
- Removing breast tissue and performing liposuction.
- Resizing and reattaching the areola by bringing together the edges of the larger incision.
Keyhole Incision[]
This procedure is usually for people who have a very small chest and tight skin. It involves:
- Making an incision along the bottom half of the areola, so it’s semi-attached.
- Removing breast tissue and performing liposuction.
- Resizing the nipple if necessary.
Breast Augmentation[]
Breast augmentation is a surgery to enlarge the breasts and commonly pursued by transfeminine individuals.
