Travesti is a third gender which exists in Latin America. Spanish and Portuguese have no gender-neutral names and pronouns, which complicates expressions of non-binary gender. Travesti originates from the Spanish term for transvestite, but is no longer used in that sense.
Travesti are typically male assigned at birth and do not seek to medically alter their genitalia, but use female names and pronouns, have breast augmentation surgery, take hormone replacement therapy and often have a feminine gender expression. Travesti may identify as being both man and woman, or see travesti as their gender identity.
